Wine of Origin
Wine of Origin — South Africa's seal of authenticity
Understanding the certification system behind every bottle of South African wine
What is Wine of Origin?
Wine of Origin (WO) is South Africa's official wine certification system, established in 1973. It is one of the oldest appellation systems in the New World, governed by the Wine and Spirit Board and administered by SAWIS (South African Wine Industry Information & Systems). When you see a WO seal on a bottle of South African wine, it guarantees the authenticity of where the grapes were grown, when they were harvested, and which grape variety was used.
What does it certify?
At least 85% of the grapes must come from the stated region, district, or ward. A wine labelled 'WO Stellenbosch' means the grapes were grown within the official Stellenbosch district boundaries.
At least 85% of the grapes must be from the stated harvest year. This lets you know exactly when the grapes were picked.
At least 85% of the wine must be made from the stated grape variety. If a bottle says Pinotage, you know that's what's in the glass.
When all three — origin, vintage, and cultivar — are certified, the bottle receives an official WO seal with a unique certification number that can be traced through the system.
The origin hierarchy
From the broadest geographical unit down to the most precisely defined ward.
Geographical Unit
Western Cape
The broadest classification. The Western Cape geographical unit covers most of South Africa's wine-producing land.
Region
Coastal Region · Breede River Valley · Cape South Coast · Klein Karoo
Regions group several districts that share broad climatic characteristics.
District
Stellenbosch · Paarl · Franschhoek · Wellington · Swartland · Constantia · Durbanville · Tulbagh · Worcester · Robertson
Districts are the most commonly seen origin on wine labels. Each has distinct terroir — the combination of soil, climate, and altitude that shapes the wine's character.
Ward
Simonsberg-Stellenbosch · Bottelary Hills · Elgin · Bot River · Banghoek · Devon Valley · Jonkershoek Valley · Polkadraai Hills
Wards are small, precisely defined areas within a district. Wines from a specific ward reflect a very particular terroir. A wine labelled 'WO Simonsberg-Stellenbosch' comes from a tightly defined area on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain.

The WO seal
Look for the small round certification seal on the bottle's neck or cap. Each seal carries a unique number that traces back to the Wine and Spirit Board's records, confirming the wine's origin, vintage, and cultivar have been independently verified. It is your guarantee of authenticity.
Visitor tip
Next time you pick up a bottle of South African wine, check the back label for the WO origin. Knowing whether a wine comes from Stellenbosch, Swartland, or Elgin tells you a lot about what to expect in the glass — even before you open it.
